List of Operational Nuclear Power Reactors in India
Nuclear energy is a crucial element of the country’s energy combination and is being followed optimally with other energy sources. It is a clean, environment-friendly base load source of power available 24X7.
It also has a huge possibility that it can help the country’s long-term energy security. There are currently 22 reactors with a total capacity of 6780 MW in operation, and one reactor, KAPP-3 (700 MW), was connected to the main grid on January 10, 2021.
The New eight reactors (including 500 MW PFBR being implemented by BHAVINI) totaling 6000 MW are under construction at various stages.
The Government of India has to grant administrative approval and financial budget for the construction of 12 new nuclear power plants – 10 indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) to be set up in fleet mode & 2 units of Light Water Reactors (LWRs) to be set up in alliance with Russian Federation.
The nuclear capacity is expected to reach 22480 MW by 2031. In addition, the Government of India has also given ‘In-Principle’ approval for five new areas for locating nuclear power plants in the future.
